  • Hello, this is Meet the Writers.

  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today is a Malaysian author who's a double Booker Prize nominee.

  • Born in Taipei, he grew up in Kuala Lumpur before moving to Britain to attend university.

  • His first Booker Prize nomination for the Harmony Silk Factory, his debut novel,

  • was followed by a second in 2013 for Five Star Billionaire.

  • His short fiction work has won an O. Henry Prize

  • and has been published in a Public Space and the Landmark Granter 1 100,

  • amongst others.

  • His latest work, the south,

  • is a coming of age novel of what happens when private and public lives collide.

  • A blend of themes including migration,

  • the effects of climate change

  • and the impact of big companies on small countries are interwoven in this novel.

  • It's the first

  • in a quartet of books that form a masterful portrait of a family navigating a period of great change

  • and the lasting effects on the environment around the world.
