We are raiding the Guardian Long Read archives to bring you some classic pieces from years past, with new introductions from the authors. This week, from 2022: As I finished the final house calls of my long career in general practice, it struck me how detached I am from my patients now – and that it was not always like this. 单集文稿 ...

  • This is the Guardian.

  • The Guardian Archive.

  • Long Read.

  • Hello,

  • my name is Claire Gerarda

  • and the article I wrote in 2022 is called in my 30 years

  • as a GP the profession has been horribly eroded.

  • So I decided to write the piece having just done a whole day on call on Boxing Day

  • and I was driving home,

  • I'd been working for 12 hours, it was pouring with rain and I felt really miserable.

  • This was the last on call I would ever do and I felt

  • that I just couldn't give my patients the sort of care that they needed,

  • but more importantly the sort of care that I would easily have been able to do 10, 15, 20 years ago.

  • Well, nothing really has changed.

  • If anything, the professional values of general practice,

  • which is about being close to their patient and close to the communities in which they live,

  • has been even further eroded.

  • I'm pretty skeptical whether there will be any change

  • because we seem hell bent in investing in hospitals but not in primary and community care,

  • which we know if you do invest, saves money, saves time and actually improves patients outcome.
