单集简介 ...

Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic are having heated conversations about whether or not governments can be made more efficient. The results include two new agencies, Elon Musk’s ad hoc Department of Government Efficiency, and Labour’s Office for Value for Money. But when it comes to improving public services, the challenges are neither new, nor easy to navigate. This week, we are asking how to make the government more efficient. And we’re asking the UK’s former chancellor of the exchequer, Jeremy Hunt. Soumaya Keynes writes a column each week for the Financial Times. 单集文稿 ...

  • When it comes to improving public services, the easy bit is spending more.

  • The hard bit is making that spending better.

  • Here in the uk,

  • money is tight and the public isn't exactly delighted with how well the state is performing.

  • So there is a huge amount of pressure to do the hard bit and make the public sector more productive.

  • This week, I'm going to ask how to make the government more efficient.

  • This is the Economics show with Samaya Keynes.

  • I'm joined here in London by former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt.

  • Jeremy, hello.

  • Hi, Samaya.

  • Okay, so on the show, we tend to start with a silly question.

  • So on a scale of 1 to 10,

  • how effective do you think a new Elon Musk style Doge or Department of Government Efficiency would be in the uk?

  • It could be very effective, actually.

  • I want a number.

  • Yes.

  • I think it's not to be sniffed at

  • because you need people who tell the system to think out of the box.

  • And Elon Musk has a lot of authority in the US because he's become a mate of Donald's.

  • And Trump is not someone who's afraid to ruffle feathers.
