  • Now let's get on with the show.

  • Welcome to the a to Z English podcast.

  • My name is Jack and I'm here with my co host social.

  • And today we are doing a vocabulary spotlight.

  • We are in or under the vocabulary spotlight and we're going to do three phrasal verbs using the verb give.

  • So there.

  • Actually, I have like six here, but we'll do three today and we'll do three in another episode.

  • So the first one is to give up something.

  • What is to give up?

  • To give up means it can either be in the context of, you make a sacrifice.

  • Like, I gave up eating red meat.

  • So you kind of gave up something that you wanted in order to reach a goal, usually, or for some purpose or reason.

  • It can also mean accepting defeat.

  • Like, I was in this race and everyone was ahead of me and I was way in the back, and so I just gave up.

  • Yep.
