The terms "silent treatment" and "cold shoulder" are often used interchangeably, but they do have slightly different connotations. Silent Treatment: This is a form of psychological manipulation where one person intentionally stops communicating with another person, typically as a way to express their disapproval, anger, or to exert control. It can be passive-aggressive behavior, often used in conflicts or disagreements as a way to punish or manipulate the other person without openly expressing their feelings. Cold Shoulder: This refers to a deliberate act of ignoring someone or showing them indifference or aloofness. It's often more overt than the silent treatment and may involve avoiding eye contact, turning away from the person, or giving short, curt responses. While the silent treatment can involve a complete cessation of communication, the cold shoulder can involve minimal or superficial communication but with an underlying sense of rejection or disdain. Both behaviors can be harmful to relationships as they undermine communication and trust. They can escalate conflicts rather than resolve them and often leave the other person feeling hurt, frustrated, or confused. It's important for individuals to address underlying issues in a constructive and respectful manner rather than resorting to these passive-aggressive tactics. Welcome to the eight is english podcast.
My name is Jack, and today I have a solo episode where I will explain two idioms.
So, we are in the idiom academy today, and these are not exactly idioms.
These are more like expressions that we use to describe certain behaviors.
Okay.
And they're kind of related, the two expressions.
One is possibly an idiom.
The other one is more of an expression that we use in English.
And the first one that we're going to look at today is the silent treatment.
So when someone gives you the silent treatment, it means that they stop talking to you, they stop communicating with you.
And this is probably everyone that has experienced a romantic relationship with someone has probably experienced the silent treatment from time to time.
And this can happen between friends, it can happen between coworkers, it can happen between lovers, but it tends to be more common among, in romantic relationships, I think.
And the silent treatment is where you're having perhaps an argument or something, and one person completely stops communicating with the other person.
So they act as if they cannot hear what you are saying.
So if you say something to them, you ask them a question, they give no response.
You may follow up with another question, can you hear me?
They don't give you a response.
It could be in an office situation.
It could be something like, hey, good morning, and nothing.
No response.
