  • Hello and welcome to Food Neighbourhoods on Monocle Radio.

  • My name is Monica Lillis and once again we visit the places locals love for their food and drink.

  • This week Monocle Sebastian Stephenson takes us to the Dublin neighbourhood of Stony Batter, north of the River Liffey to sample its culinary delights from freshly baked sourdough to authentic Italian fare.

  • Take a listen.

  • If there is one place that could distill the type of food neighborhood that Stony Batter is, it would be this chipper just off the street named Stony Batter on the road called Arbor Hill.

  • This chipper or fish and ship shop might be the name you're more familiar with is called Sorrento's.

  • It looks like any other fish and chip shop that are dotted across the British Isles.

  • Glossy white tile and fully chrome countertop.

  • But you might be surprised for them to tell you about their own sourdough and focaccia made from six types of flour and three types of starter that have just been made that day for sale.

  • Not to mention, you might have spotted on your right hand side a selection of gelato and sorbetto they have made themselves.

  • However, if you're up in the morning and want to know what kind of residents call this part of the world home, head further down the road towards a charming corner in the road where you will find the Lilliput stores.

  • This cafe and premium grocer stocks pantry essentials from premium Irish ingredients and brands along with European goods as well.

  • Once you've ordered your coffee and pastry, instead of heading into the back for a table, sit on a stool on the bench at the front of the shop to see the comings and goings along with overhearing the locals catching up with their barista behind the bar.

  • Before we make our way around, you might have noticed Lilliput also sells its own olive oil and vinegar.

  • Also take a look at the first open fridge nearest the door.

  • Look for jars of pickled onions from a brand called Lolo's Picklery.

  • Both have been assembled back down the road in production kitchens opposite Sorrento's.

  • If all the goods on the wooden shelves have lit the match for inspiration and you need to hire a kitchen to get your food brand up and running, you won't have to go very far at all.

  • Stony Bar has not one but two commercial kitchens for hire.

  • There is the Manor Street Picture House Development Kitchen and within a 10 minute walk is the Spade Enterprise Centre which has expanded its kitchen offering last autumn.
