  • Hello and welcome to Food Neighborhoods on Monocle Radio, where once again, we take you to the places locals love for their food and drink.

  • Perigueux, capital of the Dordogne department in southwestern France, is renowned for a history that is just as rich as its food.

  • From truffles and walnuts to foie gras and goat's cheese, the hallmarks of Perigord cuisine are some of the nation's most revered and can be found in local marketplaces alongside other delicious delicacies.

  • Against the old town's medieval and Renaissance backdrop, journalist and travel writer Tamara Tyson embarks on a tour de taste in.

  • The heart of the old town of Perigueux.

  • On a cold Saturday morning, about 100 local producers have gathered to sell farm fresh produce at various markets, unfurling in a rainbow of colours through the old town squares.

  • From the Place de Coderc to the Place de l'ancienne, Hotel de Ville and the Place Saint Cylhain, the atmosphere is warm and the conversation heated in an animated, convivial way.

  • The marketplaces of the ancient city of Visuna, founded in 16 BC after the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar, are like a gastronomical theater with plenty of Latin spirit.

  • Taking centre stage are local products du terroir, as the French say of the land.

  • Strawberries, spices, truffles, pate, duck and foie gras, but also flowers, fruit and vegetables.

  • Under the umbrella covered stalls on the Place du Corder, traders shout out, gesticulate and entertain the crow.

  • Some here sell a range of produce, others hone in on just one, such as fresh river fish, black bass, bream, pike, carp and perch, not forgetting sacre local fromage perigueux is as gooey and creamy as it sounds and comes in an ivory wreath like form.

  • It's a pasteurised cow's milk cheese, while the divine little cabecou, little goats, are miniature goat cheeses made from whole goat's milk.

  • Huge market pride is attached to the Noir du Perigord AOP, or Appellation d'Origines, and that includes fresh walnuts, walnut shells and kernels.

  • And all the other yummy things associated with the nuts are sold here, from walnut oil to gateau au Noir walnut cake.

  • Some of the traders at the market are folkloric local legends, according to my guide from Dordogne, Perigord Tourisme.

  • We meet one of them in Herberry Huguette, who's been trading here for 50 years, and she's quite a character.

  • What market goers love about the Perigordine markets is the tradition and the quality attached to farm produce in winter from November to March.

  • There is also the festive foie gras laden Marche au Gras held twice a week on place St.

  • Louis, a perigord tradition par excellence.
