  • Hello and welcome to Food Neighborhoods on Monocle Radio where once again we take you to the places locals love for their food and drink.

  • This week we wander the canals of Debarge in West Amsterdam.

  • With an abundance of speciality cafes, bakeries and global culinary outposts, this area of the Netherlands capital is fast becoming the preferred choice of gastronomically inclined visitors.

  • Here, Ilse Vitola takes us on a tour.

  • While Amsterdam's culinary reputation continues to grow, those after a quieter, more authentic experience should head to the Barshiyes.

  • Known for its red brick Amsterdam School architecture, this west side neighborhood is home to some of the city's top bakeries, cozy wine bars, locally roasted coffee and exceptional bowls of Thai.

  • Slow mornings are best started at Officina, a simple yet modern all day breakfast and lunch canteen on the busy Jan van hallenstraat.

  • Launched in 2021, Officina is the creation of Nayara and Zana who met at Amsterdam Fashion Institute and bonded over a shared love of food.

  • Their eye for detail is evident in the artfully plated vegetable focused dishes.

  • What stays on the menu year round is the crowd favorite soft scramble served on a crusty brioche with a tangy miso dipping sauce and a fresh salad on the side.

  • Skip the caffeine and explore their vast tea selection featuring flavors from Japan, China and Taiwan.

  • While it's hard to keep away from their white chocolate matcha cookies, save that craving for the next stop.

  • Across the road from Officina is Erasmus park with a wide canal running through.

  • Here you'll spot winter swimmers and dog owners playing fetch with their well dressed pups.

  • Stroll along the canal until you reach Jan Evertsenstrong, the neighborhood's main artery.

  • Now you'll probably notice some gathering outside the turquoise Fort Nahensein.

  • This sourdough bakery has a reputation that stretches far beyond the neighborhood.

  • There's likely to be a queue, but you'll need some time to choose anyway, from plush squares of cinnamon brioche to tiny canales and cruffins with ever changing seasonal flavors.

  • During my last visit they came filled with zesty orange compote and topped with rich nougat cream.

  • If you're in the mood for something savory, check out their sandwich shop next door.
